Sunderland continued the fight to stay above the regulation zone with a 1-0 win over Newcastle United thanks to a sweet first-half goal volleyed in by 32-year-old striker Jermain Defoe. Finding himself unmarked and in prime position to take advantage of Steven Fletcher’s looping headed pass, Defoe did not hesitate to power the ball beyond the reach of Newcastle goalie Tim Krul. Hot stuff.
