Five New Songs You Should Download Today
Jams out of Africa.
Today’s playlist is heavy on dancehall, featuring new tracks in that genre from Burna Boy, Ayo Jay and Ghanaian dancehall artiste and winner of BET’s 2015 Best International Act: Africa award, Stonebwoy. Refresh your playlist.
1. Burna Boy — Follow Me
His sophomore album doesn’t have a release date yet, but Burna Boy likes to keep things fresh. The singer’s latest track, Follow Me, was made for the clubs. Daddy Showkey can be proud.
2. Ayo Jay — Your Number (Remix) [Feat. Fetty Wap]
All prepped for a tour of the US, One Nation upstart Ayo Jay hooks up with Trap Queen rapper Fetty Wap for a remix of his 2013 dancehall track, Your Number. Yes to international collaborations.
3. Morell — Aure
Down several notches from the upbeat tempo of the first two jams on this playlist, Morell’s Aure is a soft Hausa wedding song that we really don’t understand (because, well, we don’t speak Hausa). Regardless, a beautiful song is a beautiful song in any language.
4. Tha Suspect — Lokal Govament (Feat. M.I.)
Multitalented music maker Tha Suspect recruits rapper M.I. for Lokal Govament, a conscious Afrobeat song that takes major cues from Fela Kuti. The experiment turned out just fine.
5. Stonebwoy — Go Higher
Probably the best thing to happen to Ghanaian music since azonto (and Sarkodie), Stonebwoy has become the poster child of African dancehall globally (sorry, Patoranking). Go Higher further underscores is immense talent.
